How does it work if someone needs to hook to the program distantly?

It depends on many conditions and infrastructure of your company.
If you have web-server which accessible from the internet - you can publish your 1C infobase there.
More secure way is - publish infobase in intranet of your company and give external users access via VPN.
For small company without dedicated servers you can always use virtual machine in Microsoft Azure or Amazon clouds.
