The thick client is one of the 1C:Enterprise client applications. In the Windows operating system, its executable file is 1cv8.exe. In Linux, it is simply named 1cv8.

It is called a thick client because it can execute almost all functionality provided by the 1C:Enterprise language, including working with applied data types such as CatalogObject., DocumentObject., and others.

For this reason, it requires significant hardware resources on the user’s computer and can connect to the database or the 1C:Enterprise server cluster only through file access or a local network.

Client-Server Mode

When 1C:Enterprise operates in client-server mode, the thick client connects to the 1C:Enterprise server cluster, which then interacts with one of the supported database management systems. The connection uses the TCP/IP protocol over a local network. This is the most common operating scenario. A less frequent but possible setup is when the thick client runs on the same computer as the server cluster, which can be useful for development, testing, or administrative tasks. Learn more.

File Mode

When 1C:Enterprise operates in file mode, the thick client interacts directly with the file database. In this case, it requires direct file access to the database, for example, through a shared network resource. It can also run on the same computer as the file database. In this mode, the client itself implements all functions of the file DBMS. Learn more.

Normal Mode

The thick client supports running applications in normal mode, so it can be used to run applications created in earlier platform versions (8.0 and 8.1) that did not use the managed interface or managed forms.
